Would Trying to Teach Myself Electric Guitar Be a Bad Thing?
I have an old Fender electric guitar and an amp, but I know next to nothing about guitar playing. I have briefly examined an online chords chart, but that's about it. What would your recommendations be to an absolute beginner like me? How the &$@# do I get started? What are the basic principles of playing guitar? How do I finger the guitar strings properly? How do I read tabs?
I don't have anywhere near enough money to hire an instructor. So don't even suggest that please, because it's out of the question.

learn some Black Sabbath – pretty easy stuff and teaches technique a bit too – reading tabs is easy, if you really don’t understand go to this site:

its actually better if you go about it on your own. i would start with learning these chords: C, G, Em, and D. alot of songs can be played with these chords alone. once you can easily switch between these chords try learning more chords, but not insanely hard ones that will cramp your fingers. wait until youre confident enough. strumming patterns are also a fun way to get hyped aout playing. try playing simple strumming patterns with any chord such as the "out out in in" which encompasses any four strings next to eachother.use your thumb and pointer and strum the top "out", bottom "out, then top "in" bottom "in". have fun!
