What Sort of Acoustic-Electric Guitar Should I Buy?

I'm a beginner and I have a friend who has played for years and he recommended I get an Ovation acoustic-electric guitar.

We've sort of agreed on Ovation Celebrity CC24 Acoustic-Electric Guitar but I would like to know if anybody has an other recommendations?

Any other brands?

This will be the first time I've actually PURCHASED my instrument so I want as much feedback and help as possible.

go to a music store and try a bunch out. buy the one that feels and sounds the best to you in your price range. there are lots of good brands of guitars i just depends on what is the best fit for you. Everyone has their personal favorite.

it really depends on ur own personal opinion. not ur friends, no matter how much experience he or she has. I personally love Martin acoustics because they are very high quality and have a great tone. on the other hand i never really liked ovations although they are good guitars i just do not like the style. you need to go to ur local music store and sit down with a few different guitars and just try them for urself. go with ur own choice and you will not be dissappointed.

Get an ovation. Get it to a music store and get it set up right. With any guitar, you should get a professional to juice it up. It’ll only cost about $20. I play a Celebrity too, and it’s pretty great, unless you want to be able to be more percussive with your guitar. I recommend either a taylor or a Takamine. They’re more versatile than martins.

i have the perfect choice of acoustic/electric guitar for you and it has the look of an electric guitar. it is a 400 guitar on sale for 200 at music123.com its a Peavey generation custom ex now what it is,is a beautiful electric guitar but it has a switch on it that when it is plugged in ur amp you can switch from electric to acoustic so you can play the guitar and then flip the switch nd it will sound like ur playing an acoustic without the bulkyness of an acousti. so will have the best of both worlds (hannah montana) and if you play it not plugged into your amp you can play without waking anybody up. Peavey is a grwat brand and it is a great electric guitar that with the flip of a switch will sound like you are playing an acoustic , peavey is the only one that makes them nd they are half off at music123.com becuz they are discontinuing the black and white models.i would buy one actually if i wasnt broke. its much more comfortable than starting out with an acoustic nd easier to play. so you can go that site nd read more about cuz im sure this is a bit confusing.lol. have fun

I use Ovations for performing (I have a 12 string and a six-string) and for me they’re the best electro-acoustics in the world. The curved back does make them more difficult to play sitting down, though!

I also have a Little Martin travel guitar with built in electrics, and that’s pretty awesome too. Go to a music shop, and try out as many electro-acoustics as are in your price range, and see which one sounds and plays the way you want.
If you don’t have an amp, Crafter do a very nice acoustic one.

    hope this helps

Allow me to drop a fly in the punch bowl here and say that I think an Ovation of any kind, and Celebrity is their cheaper import line, is a mistake. [There have been raging debates over the years between pro- and anti-Ovation camps and I have no desire to start that here. If anyone disagrees, fine; this is just my opinion.]

I have never played an Ovation *unplugged* that didn’t suffer from painfully thin tone. I will immediately agree that they sound fine when plugged in but first and foremost an acoustic guitar should sound fine all on its own. On the other hand, if it sounds fine to you then buy it.

The problem already mentioned about holding it on your lap is an ongoing annoyance while you’re learning unless you’re prepared to either play standing up with a strap or sitting down with the same strap.

With all due respect to your friend I recommend that you try – or have him demo for you – other guitars in the same price range and see how you feel about them. Make sure to try some with wood back and sides in place of the plastic salad bowl on the Celebrity. I think there’s really no comparison.

    Good luck.

Ovation is a good guitar indeed. I would go for a Takamine guitar. It is less expensive but has a wide variety of prices and size. It is well made, awesome sound and easy fingering.
Plus, they have the bottom cutaway which is a plus when soloing.

I’m not knocking Ovation but try one first. THey are a little awkward to get used to. Then try a Takamine. I am sure that you will love the tones better than an Ovation.

Another drawback is the fingerboard adjustments. They are tricky. I used to adjust and fine tune Ovation but a lot of them had to be returned which is the part you will never hear anyone say.
For reliability , tone, low low maintenance, check out what I have recommeded.

I have to agree with Katie….I have an acoustic/electric Takamine…and it’s without doubt the best one I have ever had…beautiful sound, awesome to play. I also used to have an acoustic/electric Takamine 12 string …beautiful guitar. The electronics used in the Taks are probably the best in the world.

I have also played an Ovation and found it to be very awkward to hold …it seem to keep slipping away from me while I was sitting with it on my lap…and I found that I had to work extra hard, taking away some of the enjoyment.

Hey underoath- you recommended a Peavey Generation thru Music 123 but i dont see them at all on the site, let alone on sale. Is this perhaps only in stock at a store near you? Pls advise. billski
