i’d suggest learning scales first.
Or even just learning your basic chords (C, E minor, A minor, and D are relatively easy… check out http://www.berm.co.nz/chords/ for diagrams and stuff.)
But don’t go completely by my word; If i were you I would get guitar lessons, and work out a plan with your instructor that is suited to you. (Many music stores that sell guitars offer guitar lessons. If they don’t offer them, they can tell recommend a good place.)
Good luck man,
i bet you’ll be rocking in no time.
Chords
My suggestion for first chords to learn would be "G," (3rd fret 6th string/2nd fret 5th string/3rd fret first string/the rest open) "D" (2nd fret 1st string/3rd fret 2nd string/ 2nd fret third string/rest open) and "C" (3rd fret 5th string/2nd fret 4th string/ 1st fret 2nd string/rest open).
Learn those well and when you can play them well switch back and fourth. Strum the g chord several times and then c and d (or whatever order you like) and do it over and over until you can switch between them faster and faster with ease. Once you can do that, learn some more chords in a similar way. Also, look for tabs where you can just play the vocals of a song so it will only be one note at a time on one string at a time so that way you can learn which notes are which on each string as well.
Don’t worry about scales and all that boring sh*t first. It turns you off guitar too quick.
Learn some easy songs that require no chords first (i.e. a theme song of some kind…i learnt the Flintstones )
Then after a couple of weeks get into your chords, and place MORE emphasize on learning the F chord (cause it’s damn hard to play for starters!!). Play some AC/DC here (i.e. Back in Black, or You shook me all night long!)
Then after about 2 months get into your theory stuff like scales.
I only really ever use two scales and they are the minor pentatonic (sounds hard, buts its actually the easiest), and the blues scale. All of the guitar gods love these scales.
I would also HIGHLY recommend lessons.
Let me say it again..
