What Guitar Would You Recommend for a Beginner?

I'm definitely leaning to electric guitars, I know everyone says start with acoustic, but I had an electric once and loved it even though I don't know how to play. Anyways, skill level aside, which do you think offers the best value, and more importantly, what should I be looking for in a guitar to buy? I'm debating my local guitar center deals or online like musician's friend where I got my last squire cheap. Any suggestions?

First off don’t listen to Cipher hes a complete and utter moron.

Anyway I bought my first electric guitar about a year ago (i should have started acoustic..sorry) And am now disappointed with my choice. I decided to go for the cheaper Epiphone SG g-400 and have ended up regretting it. I spent 400 dollars on it but now I want a Gibson SG and I see that the epiphone was a waste of money.

If you have the money (just remember this may last the rest of your life) I recommend you get the best guitar possible.

A Gibson Sg standard is a fantastic guitar for the price and give a great sound for all genres. Another good idea would be a Fender Stratocaster which is more suited to blues and rock.

I generally order my guitars from The US these days as it’s cheaper and it has always turned out well. I have recently purchased a Wah Wah pedal off Musicians Friend.

EDIT: you will regret your purchase if you listen to these others.

it really depends on what kind of music u wanna play
rock, alt rock, screamo, emo, all that crap, u should get an epiphone les paul or fender telecaster

hard rock or any kind of metal, u cant go wrong with a schecter or a jackson

    Hello there,

I do not agree with those who say you should start with an acoustic guitar. I believe you should start with whichever you want to play. Learning is hard enough, Being forced to learn on an instrument you really do not want to play makes the learning more difficult. Play what you like.

Here is a link to a series of video lessons at Youtube. You can learn a lot about the basics from this guy. Save the link so you will have it when you do get your guitar.

As for what guitar to buy. It is really a matter of personal preference. However, two good beginner guitars are the Squier Strat and the Epiphone Les Paul. You cannot go wrong with either.

I would suggest you buy a used guitar. You can get a used good quality guitar for about the same price as a new lesser quality guitar. More bang for your buck. In addition to the places you mentioned, take a look on eBay. There are frequently good deals to be found there on used guitars.

    Later,
    Norm

First off all guitar shops meet Online Pricing!! If they don’t walk away.

I’d go into guitar center and at least hold a few guitars. You’ll notice that they all feel very different. Necks are bigger or smaller than others, some are heavier than others. So just see if anything feels ok too you.

I must say Squire guitars are some of the best beginner guitars out there, but I’m also a fan of Ibanez’s beginner guitars because the action on the neck is much faster usually. Basically means its more finger friendly…check out your local pawn shops.

I actually found myself a Mexi Fender Tele for $70 mint condition.

if you’re dedicated, start with a classical guitar, thick neck, thick frets. they well help you build strength, especially for them bar chords. the nylon strings wont give you blisters. that’s what i started with(even though i wanted to play rock) and i’m so grateful for it. Later i switched to electric.

Okay, as far as acoustic versus electric it is very simple. Buy according to what type of music you enjoy. Sure an acoustic will make your fingers stronger, so will rock climbing…big deal. Your fingers will get as strong as they need to be to play the instrument you have and that’s all that matters. The most important thing for a beginner is sticking with it. We all know how many people quit guitar after just a few months or even weeks. If you are into metal for instance you will not be happy playing John Denver tunes on an acoustic. So base it on the type of music you like. As far as what guitar to get, that is a very open-ended question and depends on many factors. I do agree that you should buy the best guitar you can afford. Remember that doesn’t always mean the most expensive or even that it is made in American. I really hate to say it, but my Korean Schecter plays better than my American Gibson’s or Fender’s. I have 8 guitars right now and the Schecter C-1 Classic just smokes all of them including my American Deluxe Telecaster, American Les Paul and SG. There are many great guitars out there but this is a deal just too good to pass up. Get one while you can. The sunburst color I got and the transparant green are already sold out at American Musical Supply. All 3 colors are already sold out on Guitar Center’s and Musicians Friend’s websites. Buy this guitar NOW…you will not regret it. Plays and feels like a $2000 to $3000 guitar…seriously!! This is a closout sale, so once they’re gone that’s it and they are going fast.
