   well the "best" strings depend on some things. Is he a rock player? a jazz player?

   Those 2 genres in particular use 2 different kinds of strings to have the best performance.

   I’m a jazz player. So I use flatwound mellow strings made from chrome by D’Addario. I recommend that brand too. If he is a rock player, you should buy Roundwound strings, they’re more for rock. I forget the favorable metal for rock guitars, but most string envelopes have a classifier anyway from "bright" to "mellow." Select a string more toward the "bright" category if he’s a rock player, "mellow" more if he’s a jazz player. Now if he’s a blues player, select kinda in between.

   What if he’s an acoustic player you ask? Acoustic or classical guitars are more oriented toward either nylon strings or roundwound brass or copper strings.

   Also be mindful of the gauge. Jazz players use a higher gauge for more mellow tone, rock players use a ligher gauge for the brigher sound. Gauge is just the diameter of the strings.

   I have 2 guitars, 1 electric, 1 acoustic-electric

   I use (and remember I’m a jazz player):
   Electric: Flatwound jazz chromes, medium gauge
   Acoustic-Electric: Roundwound Brass, medium gauge
