my advice is pick a simple band that you like and start finding tablatures

some good bands to start with are greenday, acdc, the ramones, the sex pistols. really anything with a little barchords because once you learn barchords you can play many different things and will pave the way to learning lead riffs

once you find a nice simple band you like go look at places like 911tabs.com or ultimate-gutiar.com (my favorite) and search for song names, it’ll give you tabs for them which are pretty self explanatory (chart showing the string to hit and what number fret, extremely easy to learn)

good luck and i hope that helps you

(if you’re still looking for a guitar i suggest getting a fender squire stratocaster, they’re made in china but are identicle to american made strats and only cost about 200 dollars. don’t go for the starter pack, it’s better to buy stuff independant, my first set of gear was a squire strat and a crate 16 watt amplifier.)

Buy a book or two and take some lessons. That’s how I started. The lessons started to suck, but I learned the basics. Now I mainly just teach myself with tabs.

well first get and electric guitar. a good epiphone les paul or gibson, stratocaster would be good. maybe even a silvertone or something. then get a note scale chart and other stuff to go with ur guitar like amp, picks, tuner, cables, headphones stuff like that. if u want to learn by ur self just first learn the notes and scales keep practising all the time over and over so u get used to te notes. them move on to easy songs.

Get you a beginner’s guitar book that shows you basic chord structure and simple beats. Once you learn some basic progressions such as CFG/EAB/ADE you can play thousands of songs. It’s always nice to have the book to go back and look up chords as you need. You can also go on the internet and see actual videos of guitar lessons. You can teach yourself, but it requires an amount of natural ability as well as a lot of work, but well worth it. Keep on jammin!!!!!!

Use scales to improve your finger placement and speed on the fret board. Learn a couple of chords at a time and learn to move from one to the other.

Easy songs can be found tabbed at ultimate guitar. Look for songs you like because you will know the strumming technique or picking technique.

Use a gripmaster to work out your fingers while not on a guitar. Your fingers will need to excercise to get them ready for tougher songs.

A good easy intro to learn is Stairway to Heaven or try Smoke on the Water. As you don’t have to stretch your fingers too much during the first part of the intro. Keep on doing scales for a while and you will find your fingers getting looser.

    Good Luck

Buy a nice guitar, one that you will WANT to play. Check craigslist.com. There are plenty of good guitars for $200 or less. Ibanez is a good and playable example. Stay away from pawn shops for your first because they do not have a technician who can set it up for you. Buy used so that you can get most of you money back if you decide it isn’t for you.

Buy a book and learn these three cords: C, G, and D, then maybe E and A (in major and minor) A great deal of rock lives in these cords. Practice smooth transitions and mix up the combinations. Take a few lessons to get yourself on the right track as far as technique and to learn some blues rhythms. This is now a good time to get a small practice amp.

Seek out other guitarist. We are always willing to show people tricks and licks. Getting into a band will make you a better player fast because now you will be accountable to the band and will practice more and have deadlines. Now you should be looking for that 50 – 100 watt gig amp. Play thru everything and play with the knobs until you find "your sound".

The biggest and best piece of advice I can give is to PRACTICE SLOWLY AND CORRECTLY!!! The speed will come.
