Electrics are smaller and easier to fret, but I would recommend learning on whatever you already have. An electric set up is expensive so wait until you can play fairly well before you make that investment.
I think an acoustic with nylon strings is less on the fingers when you practice a lot but then after you learn the basics and build up your fingers! Adding an electric will make it more fun. Maybe you could really get into it and practice and then your next birthday or Christmas- ask for the electric!
Electric is easier, you need less string in your hands and fingers than with accoustic. For this reason it is better to fully master accoustic first then electric will be relatively easy and you will be a better all round player. Plus you do not need to plug an acoustic in to practise.
Yes, electric guitars have lower action and lighter gauge strings in general which makes them easier to play. There is no reason to start on acoustic, but I can see her point since you already have an acoustic. How good are these acoustics though? It is hard to learn on a cheap and crappy acoustic for sure. If it’s anything from Target or Wal*Mart like a Starcaster then you need a better guitar.
it doesnt matter you can learn either one and be able to transfer what you know to the other, there are some techniques that are more common on electric or acoustic, but you can do all on both, good luck
try learning a lot of the techniques step by step from http://guitarmanual.typepad.com and get the ebook from there, good luck !! email me if you need extra help or have questions
