I have been wanting to learn to play electric guitar since I was a little kid when I saw sign o the times by prince. I have been wanting to learn now that I can afford a guitar and learn to play. So my question would be is it easy to learn and read the chords and where can I go to learn to play????

Facemob,
It is easy to learn if you do it the right way. There are a lot of ways to learn and some are harder than others.
The best approach is one in which you have FUN. Here’s the best way I know to have fun learning the electric guitar:
1. First make a short list of your favorite pop/rock (or any genre) songs. Maybe 10.
2. Look up chords for these on the web.
3. Pick out the one with the fewest number of chords
4. Look up those chords and learn how to finger them
5. Play that song every day for a week or two, and you’ll KNOW those chords by heart.
6. Rinse and Repeat
That will get you started and keep you occupied for months. There is much more information about learning guitar at a website know of, and I will include the link below in case you are interested.
Good luck rocking!

"To play the guitar well is easy, to play the guitar poorly is difficult." Now with this being said, it takes hard work, dedication and lots and lots of practise to play well. Although the more you do, the better you’ll play, the more you’ll enjoy it, and the easier it will be to put in the effort to continue. Just don’t assume it’ll happen overnight. Or your bound for a difficult experience…. Good Luck!
Easy? It’s all relative.
If you enjoy playing the guitar as much as I do, even the difficult things are a labor of love. The hardest part is getting over the initial hump… In the beginning, your fingers hurt and it’s easy to get frustrated. That’s perfectly normal, and all of that will go away with time. You need to practice often.
Learning to read music (for guitar, especially) isn’t very hard at all. Standard sheet music is rarely used, and what’s left (tabs and chord charts) appeal very strongly to common sense.
It’s possible to teach yourself, there’s several websites that can help you along your way. Honestly, I don’t know the best ones, I started learning when the internet was a baby. (Anyone remember 14.4K AOL an hour at a time?) The fastest and easiest way is with lessons. Another tried and true thing, google "guitar tabs," they’re easy to read and if you think they’re hard to read there’s a billion tutorials, etc.
If you want to learn how to play, there’s no time like now, go for it. Good luck.

Sign o the times is a great tune! And yes it’s easy to learn guitar. All it takes is consistent practice. No less than 30 min a day.

Although the focus is more on acoustic guitar the fundamentals are the same for the electric guitar.
Learning chords, strumming, basic technique etc.
If you specifically want to learn lead guitar then you can visit my site where I’m busy uploading a series of 23 video lessons to teach you the basics of electric guitar at http://www.leadguitarzero2hero.com. All free of charge!
I would suggest starting with acoustic though to cover the basics and then you can start with the electric. Here’s a short video to explain why starting with acoustic is better.
