I Want to Learn How to Play Guitar, Please Help?

Ever since I was a little kid, I have always loved the sound of the guitar, I like acoustic, but my friend just gave me his Electric guitar (just a cheap one, but sounds good) I have a couple questions.

1)If I want to know how to play acoustic, can I still learn on electric, or is there a big difference? I mean , i know the difference as in sound, but can I still learn on the electric?

2) I am a Strong willed person, I can learn if I want, just never really had the chance until now that I got this guitar, I want to know, is there any website online that will teach me the basics of guitar for FREE, like chords and all that. I dont care about ones you have to pay for, I can find those. but is there actually a site that will teach you for free? or just the basics to get me started??? ]

1.yes, you can start on an electric. but it’ll take a while to get used to an acoustic, since it’s a bit harder to play.

    2. try http://www.justinguitar.com check the beginners course!

    (That website changed my life!!!)

    and also: http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=JustinSandercoe

Yes you can learn on a electric, it just when you play an acoustic the strings will be much stiffer, and will probably hurt your fingers for a while. The best way to learn for beginners is by tabliture. The best tab sites that I have found are http://www.ultimate-guitar.com, http://www.mxtabs.net. Try and find a song that you really like, but doesn’t sound too hard, and look up the tab for it. I would suggest a song like "Free Falling", by Tom Petty, "All I Can Do is Write a Song", by Lynyard Skynyrd. Practice all you can and stick with it, just couse you cant get it in a day, doesn’t mean its not ment for you, It takes months to really get the hang of it. Good Luck!

Acoustic is a little harder to finger the chords, but you should be able to get the basics and convert easy enough.

try Youtube.com for some free lessons. There are some good ones and some bad ones as to be expected.

"Guitar for Dummies" got me started, while Mel Bay and thier many publications can get you even further.

find people to play with. You will learn an incredible amount that way.

Well I taught myself by playing tabs and watching videos of other guitarists. Now I have a wide variety with music. There’s a couple videos on youtube on how to play things but really if you just practice like everyday you’ll get better. You just gotta know which guitarists are good and all. If you like acoustic stuff you might wanna see James Taylor, Eric Clapton, or this one song by Extreme it’s called "Hole Hearted". More Than words is also nice to play. But yea you can learn acoustic songs on an electric guitar.

    For tabs, I suggest http://ultimate-guitar.com
And if you have limewire, you can get the guitar pro program from there. The guitar pro tabs make if so much easier to learn songs and solos.
