Lots of people teach lessons on youtube just type in: how to play guitar and see what comes up. Also learn how to read tablature, type that in too. Then you can read the music or tabs to songs on http://www.ultimate-guitar.com.
in simple words,, try doing crazy stuff :]] thats the best, making up your own songs, even if there simple,..
also,
go to ultimate-guitar.com for tabs, that web site has all free tabs and is great
learn simple songs like marry had a little lamb,, (example) and you can build your way up from that..so you can play Metallica stuff
also, on other websites, look up chords, and the notes on the strings,,
yea,, that good advice XDD
There are lots of great video lessons on youtube. Also, check out justinguitar.com
These DVD’s are great and cheap. I highly recommend them.

from experience from me and friend who have had lessons, the best way is to start out finding guitar tabs of songs you really like on ultimate-guitar.com some people learn differently though so try them all out by experimenting. the best way to learn though is to have fun playing it because that way you always know you will pick it up again. just have fun
pick a song you really like ie (Smoke on the water)
learn the cords to it
but i would recommend starting out with the Acoustic guitar
Pick up a guitar. Put aside some time, and simply play some notes.
Basically, once you get used to where the different note/sounds are, then you can try playing some simple songs. After a while, progress to some harder songs.
Self-taught guitarists tend to have more soul in what they play, I’ve noticed.
It’s not so mechanical, but rather, it’s like the music actually means something to them.
And believe me, there’s not much of a better feeling than being an accomplished self-taught musician.
If you dedicate just a few minutes everyday, you’ll definitely go far.
Rock on, man =D
