How Do I Start Playing/learning Electric Guitar?
Hey,
I've owned an Electric Guitar for just over a year now and I've been very lazy and only know the very basics. This is because I only occassionaly pick up the Guitar and play with it for a little while, seeing as I have no formal training/lessons. I was wondering if there were any specific websites/online resources/books/sources I could use to improve my guitar skills as a beginner.

I was almost exactly like you. I had my guitar sitting in my room gathering dust for about 2 years before I actually started playing it. I have not taken any formal lessons. If your like me, you’ll only need a little tutoring when you first get started, then you should be able to teach yourself pretty well. I used http://www.justinguitar.com. Its a great site run by a great guitar instructor and best of all its completely free. He’ll teach you the basics, and if you want, the more advanced. Personally, I like to teach myself, but usually you just need some help getting started

The best way to learn how to play guitar is to be dedicated to it, so try picking it up everyday even if it’s for a half hour. You tube has some good lessons on there and it’s visual! Hope this helps!
There’s plenty of stuff online you can check out. If you go to guitar center, there’s DVD’s of playing guitar and stuff. another things you can do is go to http://www.ultimate-guitar.com and check out what they have there. I LOVE that website. they have tabs for learning to play songs and they have lessons for finger exercises and learning how to shred. remember, practice practice practice. good luck
I’ve been playing both acoustic and electric guitar for about a year now. I’m self-taugh, and I’m not great but I can play pretty well. I would recommend youtube, it has helped me the most, and combine it with ultimate-guitar.com you can learn almost anything. I’ve learned a few things from http://www.gibson.com/en-us/Lifestyle/Lessons/Search/ too. http://guitar.about.com/library/blguitarlessonarchive.htm is another website I have used that has also been very helpful. I wouldn’t recommend going out and purchasing any books or DVDs, their are so many helpful resources online, and I have found some of them to be a waist of money.

There are tons of free beginner lessons online, but they only teach you the basics. Your best best is to take private lessons with a teacher. You can find some near you using Craigslist or sites like http://www.findguitarteachers.com
