Electric or Acoustic Guitar for Beginner?

I want to learn guitar, but I have a few questions first. Acoustic or electric for starting? Where are some free online videos I can watch and learn from? How long does it take to learn how to get the hang of it usually? What are good brands of guitars to buy? I want to eventually play electric but I don't know if I should start with acoustic first.

  1. The Past Recedes says:

Start with an acoustic as you need to build up the strength in your fingers and as someone said (there isn’t as much pain as some people make out, trust me), it will be an easy transition to electric whereas if you learned on an electric first, a transition to acoustic would be difficult due to how much easier it is on your fingers to play an electric. As for brand, it doesn’t really matter as long as it suits you, I would say not to go for an expensive one first off as it may be a waste if you turn out not to like playing guitar (which I doubt, if you persevere). As for sights to learn on, there is youtube of course which has helped me in the past but also, justinguitar.com which has a beginners course and is free. Good luck, and enjoy!

    Electric most guitarists will say.
    I am one.

  3. Oscar S says:

electric, u can get cheapo electric guitars. its cooler, sounds better, and easier on ur fingers to play (acoustic ripped my fingers up when i started)
also, learn from guitar tabs, its how i learned.
    enjoy learning

  4. Scrapper says:

prolly acoustic…try this (www.GuitarControlHelp.com)…it depends on how long you practice a day, but usualy you can play a song or two in about 4 months…if you start with a full size guitar then the brand doesn’t realy matter…if you start with acoustic and then switch to electric it will be an easyer switch…

i think this is up to you. acoustic will create calasts (sry cant spell) on ur fingers quicker then electric would. with that, you can easily rip chords and finger pick when you become more advanced. with electric, anybody starting can start playing easily because its easy to slide up and down with an electric. i personally recommend you start off with acoustic because you will soon realize that after you’ve gotten the acoustic down, the electric will be a breeze and you will tear it up.

start off cheap dude, like a starter yamaha at ur local guitar center or somethin, then after a while you will know what to look for in a guitar when you become better, to each its own.

if you want to learn fast, practice every day. i learned my chords playing nirvana riffs then you can upgrade to different bands. i personally learned to play many instruments (including foriegn) just by practicing and using my ears after a song to find out whats played. you tube always helps as well. once you get the flow, things come natural.

It’s ALWAYS good to start with an acoustic. Electrics are a bit easier, but I would get a cheap Acoustic Johnsons guitar. Once you learn chords and song and find your paying style you can upgrade to either an electric or just a better brand.
Youtube has vids you can learn from

There are no free videos that will teach you well. At most they can help you as extra material in addition to quality instruction.

Acoustic or electric doesn’t matter all that much. Some people find an electric a bit easier to play because of the typically lower action and narrower fretboard, but that’s not necessarilly the case.
Electrics are also usually heavier and harder to take with you as you also need a big and heavy amplifier (which needs electrical power so you can’t very well take it when camping).
Getting a decent electrical outfit (guitar, amplifier, cables) will also cost you more than getting an acoustic guitar of similar quality.

For a beginner, Yamaha and Ibanez have quite nice instruments.

  8. Average Mike says:

Don’t believe anyone who tells you that you should necessarily start with an acoustic guitar. You can learn just as easily on an electric or an acoustic guitar. The choice comes down to which one is more appropriate for the music you want to make and which one will therefore keep you more motivated to keep at it until you succeed. You’ve already indicated your interest lies with the electric guitar, so that’s where you should start.

Be aware that your start up costs are higher with the electric guitar since you will need at the very least a small practice amp as well as the guitar itself. Expect to spend at least $300 to get started. Good beginners’ brands are Ibanez, Epiphone, and Fender. Buy from a music store and nowhere else.

Everyone learns at a different rate. If you’re having fun, however, it won’t matter. Obviously everyone wants to be good as quickly as possible but try to enjoy the journey.

    Good luck.

Unless you wear headphones, or live alone, I’d say acoustic.
Do you really want all those learning curves, and mistakes amplified?
I think acoustic strings are easier on your hands as you build up your fingers. Google how to learn guitar and you’ll find hundreds of sites. Some will give you free weekly lessons and then try to sell you a course. Also YouTube. Libraries have books too and since there are so many courses out there, there are inexpensive books with c.d.’s you can buy, keep and have when you’re not in front of a computer. Free online tuning gadgets are good too. For an expert opinion, why not go to your local music store or call a guitar teacher or two? (and with acoustic guitars as low as $75 I can’t agree with another answerer who says electric is cheaper.) How long it takes depends on your goals, talent, how much time you spend etc. Good luck!
