Electric Guitar Simulation

how to connect the electric guitar with a laptop?
i hav an electric guitar that I connect to my laptop Compaq Presario CQ40. I use Windows Vista Ultimate. I used the Intex 2600W Subwoofer Speaker to connect my guitar to my office or used a decent simulation software effects guitar No results were satisfactory. but I do not know why this work does not work on my laptop. I can connect the subwoofer to my laptop system n works well. But when I connect my guitar to the microphone port not hear anything. my laptop does not register guitar. I am able to record sound played on guitar but I can hear only after the recording ... ie im not able to hear sound in real time. even if I connect a microphone, not always all the sounds in real time. This configuration works perfectly on my desktop but not on my laptop ...... plz suggest Sumthin. Wil detailed responses to be assessed
treat to go into Control Panel> Sounds and select Properties, (the speakers) to later levels and activate the microphone! but be careful to use headphones so as not to hear the noise caused by the closure of the sound.
