ha i did the same thing to get me through my 4 years in high school im on year 3 and i choose the bass. it is pretty cool cause i get to play at the basketball games and all the cheerleaders give me song request
in my school bass seems to be a big deal since there are only about 4 bassist in the school but 350 or so guitarist…..GO WITH BASS
Both of them are equally the same, needing patience, and a will to let your fingers hurt for about 2 months.

Happy learning.
Choose the one that suits your personality, picture yourself on a stage, do you see yourself at the front or the back? Then there would be your answers.
I don’t think there’s really any down side or up side to either of them.
Everybody needs both of those instruments in a band. You’ve just got to pick the one that suits you and no one else.
That’s all I can say.
I play acoustic guitar though, rhythm mainly, but I also love the sound of the groove in a bass line.
There are alot of people who play electric guitar for a reason mate. When you play guitar you will have so many more song opportuinties to learn. For bass, youll mostly see songs where you are plucking the same thing oveer and over. Bass gets boring if you play alone because songs are the same all the way through, unless youre joining aband choose guitar or else you will be stuck playing bass alone and be bored of it. Bsides playing guitar will be more impressive when you are showing someone what you can play.
bass is boring at the beginning when ur just learning cuz u dont know all the things u can do with it.
guitar is hard and takes lots of time to get good and yeah like u said ppl like it more when u play guitar.
i started out playing guitar and switched to bass.
i like bass better than electric guitar.
lots of different techniques with bass and just overall i would say funner to play then guitar. and plus if u play bass it will be easy for you to find ppl to jam with, like u said lots of ppl play guitar.
I am teaching myself to play guitar- i started with an acoustic, but only because of financial troubles… and now i have an electric… okay, so i can play two songs… not great..but i’ve never had a guitar lesson in my life… so i’m proud.
I say that a guitar sounds better on it’s own, but a bass can sound great alone too…
First: do you want to take up guitar as a simple hobby (as the question implies) or are you planning to join a band? if you want to join a band, then you are more likely to get in if you play bass… because as you said, not many people do play…
Second: consider your taste in music…. which fits best? low pitched bass… or guitar?
Finally, consider your own ability… do you have a lot of co-ordination, and good movement with your fingers? Bass (or Rhythm on a guitar) require less movement, whereas lead guitar (the high pitched solo’s in rock) require faster and more agile fingers…
to be honest, i only picked regular, because i had an old acoustic up in my attic
Both instruments have their charms.
Guitar is found in a variety of genres, but most of those require specialised instruments (a rock guitar is different to a gypsy jazz guitar is different to a classical guitar, etc), so with one instrument you’ll be stuck in a small handful of genres. Bass is also found in a bunch of genres, but is more forgiving (you can play Motown or funk or rock or metal or jazz or blues all with the same instrument).
I personally find bass more rewarding for meditative solo improvisation – there’s few things as satisfying as hitting an open E and letting it ring out for five minutes while you noodle about with melodies over it.
Guitar is better for actual songwriting.
If you’re a singer with a low range, bass might be a better choice as it’ll allow you to accompany your own singing (whereas a guitar wouldn’t go low enough to provide the all-important bassline). Guitar is certainly the more conventional choice in this regard, so if your voice isn’t exceptionally low, guitar will be more useful for accompaniment.
Both instruments have a wide scope for development. Bass might be more immediately satisfying, as you’ll be able to play along to songs you know almost from the get-go (simple guitar chords take a lot more learning than repetitive single-note basslines), but don’t be fooled – it’s as deep an instrument as the guitar is.
All in all, if you can’t make up your mind, I would suggest you pick bass – this planet doesn’t have enough bassists.
