What would be a good electric guitar for me as a beginner?

I want a guitar that will last me a while because I wont be able to get another one fro about 2 years.I also want it to be a great all around guitar that will play classical rock and songs from Metallica.

Since guitars are very personal and each one has its own feel, you should start out by going to a guitar store and test driving a bunch of them. If you're a beginner, you'll probably want something with a thin neck, since it will be easier to move quickly between notes and chords. Ibanez makes some great guitars and the necks tend to be thin and the pickup configurations will allow you to play many styles of music, including classic rock and metal. Ibanez instruments are also built like rocks and are often nicer than guitars that cost twice as much. I bought an Ibanez as a starter guitar about 20 years ago and still use it for live shows and recording, even though I've got several Fenders, an Epiphone Les Paul and a Rickenbacker.

If you want to do some research before going to a guitar store, I recommend checking out the Musician's Friend website. You can search by brand, price or customer rating and they also have customer reviews that have been very helpful to me when I'm looking for a new guitar. I usually start out reading the Musician's Friend reviews, then go to Guitar Center to try the models that caught my eye, and then go back to Musician's Friend to make the purchase (since purchases from there ship free and the guitar hasn't been out on a sales floor, being handled by all sorts of people).

The most important thing is to choose a guitar that feels comfortable in your hands, since that will be more important than anyone else's opinion. Trust your instincts and ignore snobs who insist you have to buy a certain brand. There are many good guitar manufacturers and you don't have to spend hundreds of dollars to get a guitar that will serve you well for decades. The more natural a guitar feels to you, the faster you'll learn and the sooner you'll be a rock star. Good luck!
