Hi Joplinman. Good observation. I am in the camp of clawhammer players who believes that the thumb should be firmly stationed on the sixth sttring when it’s not otherwise engaged. This helps with focus and minimizes overall hand movement. This may be awkward at first but it is wise to work on it.

As for new lessons, I filmed a couple new ones last week that should be posted shortly.

Thanks for trying out the Claw. I hope it continues to take you in new directions.

Thanks Steve – I will work on it and keep a look out for further lessons. The main difficulty I am finding with this first lesson is working out your pattern of finger and thumb strikes in the demo piece at the start of the lesson – you are very fast! Is there anywhere I can see this piece slowed down in order to get the pattern right rather than approximate? Sounds SO great – and I really want to nail it properly. Rob

do you need nails on your finger for this? cause you responded to someone saying you dont need thumb nails but i have no nails what so ever? i was thinking of buying finger picks to help me? i really wanna learn this technique to get dire straights style of playing down

I have SO much to learn. Sure wish I started playing at 13 rather than 53. If it took it took you 2 months to get it down, probably a decade for me, but it looks interesting. I’ve been trying to come up with something different than just strumming the same chords over and over. This may be JUST what I’m looking for. I’ll certainly give it a shot. Thanks for taking the time to make this video.

What a great lesson! Thank you Steve. Im going to see how long this takes me to learn. Currently play the whistle and been thinking of taking up the guitar again; this has inspired me. (I don’t know anyone here in England who eats crumpets and tea. More likely to be scones and jam and clotted cream.)

  11. lukeashmoore says:

Awesome Lesson. Plus, as much as you love england i love america! Fat redneck women stuffing twinkies into their face at burger king, idiot presidents, bigoted christianity, massive cars that break down all the time, crab grass… the list goes on! xx

  12. hindubatman says:

So Elliot Smith came back from the dead and started teaching clawhammer guitar? In all seriousness, this is a great lesson. Thanks!

  13. buggernuts100 says:

Is there anyway of playing without screwing up your nails? I strum with my nails whenever I can’t find a pick so my index/middle finger nails are really thin and weak. Any ideas? :P

  14. DuskY1991 says:

“Downward motions which are much more powerful than upward motions.”
    Unless you’re Keith Richards… =P
    Great lesson!

  15. chrileboy says:

you don’t have to oppologize for England. There are bunch of heretic protestants. (mostly everyone is these days though). CATHOLICISM IS THE TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. dekude says:

Haha, I love this guy. Thanks for the tips, I’m gonna internalize the shit out of that shit.

  17. highervista says:

thanks this is useful ,however you are talking about piedmont guitar style.nothing to do with prince charles,
it is american it is the style of etta baker or missippi john hurt, or sam mcghee.I find this sort of inaccurate[Prince charles stuff ]annoying it has no connection with england it is an american style, its inaccurate

  21. dickmilesmusic says:

you are taking inaccurately it has nothing to do with England, it is travis picking or piedmont guitar, as used by missippi john hurt, ette baker, sam mcghee.prince charles has nothing to do with it, i find you comments offensive and inaccurate, its an american style. your vidoes are great ,though, you are basically adapting a frailing banjo style. the bum ditty rhythym can be used as well up picking [Pete SeegerBanjo style, although you are picking upthe rhythym bum ditty is th same.

  22. dickmilesmusic says:

it is an excellent video, are you damping the bass string at all, you seem to be hitting it lightly?

  23. steve1banjo says:

@dickmilesmusic HI DICK. I’M GLAD YOU LIKED THE LESSON. MY TUMB DOES DAMP THE BASS STRING SOMETIMES BY LANDING ON IT EARLY. ON BANJO I DO THAT ON EVERY THUMB NOTE, ON GUITAR IT’S A MATTER OF TASTE.

SORRY YOU WERE OFFENDED BY “THE PRINCE CHARLES PICK.” I WONDER WHY. I WAS SIMPLY ASSERTING THAT THE ENGLISH ARE NOT QUITE RIGHT WHEN THEY CALL TRAVIS PICKING “CLAWHAMMER,” AND I HAD A BIT OF FUN WITH THE FUTURE KING ALONG THE WAY. HE’S A DECENT CHAP NONETHELESS.

    ALL THE BEST,
    SB

  24. dickmilesmusic says:

are you damping with your thumb or hand, thanks for your help

  25. steve1banjo says:

@dickmilesmusic I AM DAMPING WITH MY THUMB ON THE BASS STRING/S. NO PALM OR HAND MUTING GOING ON AT ALL, ALTHOUGH IT IS POSSIBLE TO ADAPT THIS TECHNIQUE TO MAKE IT MORE PERCUSSIVE.

    THANKS FOR YOUR INTEREST,
    SB
