I have been playing for 28 years and when I played around on my own for about a year and a half until I started taking lessons. In my opinion, unless you are some kind of prodigy that thinks in music the way some people think in math, you need some instruction to advance.
The first things that I found out from my first teacher were that I was holding my guitar wrong, did not relax and trust my strap to do the work of holding the guitar, and that I was reading my finger placements all wrong and was actually making it more difficult to play.
There are a lot of books and downloads out there but I really think human interaction is important. Even if you met up with someone for an hour a month it will speed your progress faster than any Rock Guitar for Dummies book.
Just practice practice practice and don’t worry about playing songs until you have the core chords down pat. It is like learning to type… before you can crank out page after page you start with jkj jkj jkj jkj lol lol lol lol…. build a solid base of skills and you will learn at a geometrical rate. Good Luck and don’t stop.
Check Craigslist in your area for a local musician that teaches.
well, most great rock legends taught themselves without dvds or books, so i’m sure if you just go to a book store or a video store, you’ll find one very easily.
I learned from the internet. No lessons from anyone.
This is all you need.
I did this helps or learn acoustic it helps and is the same thing
I know that some people post videos on YouTube to teach you how to play various instruments. Some of them are very good and look almost professionally done. Maybe you could look there.
I taught myself, I got song books with songs that I know and like. Then I played and played and played. Chordie.com is a good site to find songs you might like.
most people (like my self) have to have a few lessons but after a while you can listen to something and the play it ( like my self)
i have learnt like, two really easy songs, white stripes and katenash (y) lols.
but i do know loads of people that are really good, with no lessons.
i learned acoustic without any lessons and it’s pretty the same concept. but a lot of musicians taught themselves how to play an instrument.
I started without books and dvds, I taught myself just by going through tabs, and figuring stuff out myself.
I started just palying around with one and A friend Showed me a power chords and I started playing Green Day stuff, then it went to matchbook romance, then to Queens of the stone age, chili peppers, hendrix and so on. Really it just takes a wide musical influence and allot of time and really if you want to play good quick in like a year and a half or so, you have to have NO LIFE WHAT SO EVER. I mean, no weekends out, no extracariculars. Nothing but being along playing guitar night after night. and also learning allot of differant songs.
thats how I did it
